Walkout by Indonesian legislators possible: delegate
JAKARTA, Nov 9 (AFP) - A member of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly
(MPR) said here Monday that it was possible some members could walk out of a
disputed crucial session this week if they disagree with it."A walk-out is ... simply a statement of opposition," Aisyah Amini was quoted
as saying by the state Antara News Agency on the eve of the session, which is
opposed by reformists and students."It is not impossible for us to do so," said Aisyah, who is chairperson of
Commission I of the House and a member of the United Development Party (PPP),
the only faction of the MPR which has opposed the military holding seats in
parliament.Asked whether the PPP would walk out if it disagreed with the conclusion of
the four-day special session of the 1,000-member MPR staring Tuesday, she said
that it would be decided during the meeting."We have done it in previous occasions," she said, as another MPR delegate
appealed to fellow members not to walk out."May there be no walk-out. We are here to deliberate and together to make
decisions for the benefits of the whole people. So, deliberations should go
smoothly," Lukman Harun of the ruling Golkar was quoted by Antara as telling
journalists.Students who oppose the session, and consider the MPR a mere rump-Suharto
body, say they think it will be incapable of doing any more than try to
preserve the status quo, and ignore calls for reform.The students' main demand is an end to the military's role in politics. They
also want former president Suharto, who fell from power May 21, brought to
trial.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
