Why Use APC?

• access vast information resources including women's news, activities and events quickly and easily;
• efficiently and inexpensively network with women in other cities and countries;
• send action alerts, newsletters and announcements to many people in one easy step, using fax or e-mail mailing lists; and
• contribute to discussions and preparations for ICPD and WCW.
  APC can be used with virtually any computer and modem, and from many cities in various countries like the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom and the United States you can access APC with a local phone call.

  Electronic Conferences

  Join an International Community! Currently there are a series of on-line conferences in which women world-wide are preparing for WCW. The Women's Network is working closely with the WCW UN Secretariat and WCW NGO Planning Committee as well as women's NGOs worldwide to enhance communication around women's issues. Join these discussions in the on-line conferences!

  Any organization can "post" their newsletters and action alerts in a conference for the on-line community to read and respond to. When you post to a conference, the information is available to all users in the United States instantly, and internationally within hours.   • women.info.src - This moderated conference will contain detailed listings of information sources pertaining to women's issues - databases, live or electronic networks, books, clearing houses, documents, ibraries.
  • women.news - News items and announcements regarding women and women's issues.
  • women.only - A private discussion place for women only. Email 'support' for access information.

  • women.violence - News/information/discussion relating to all acts of violence against women.

    Private Conferences

    Private conferences (where only certain users can have access) can be set up to facilitate internal international group decision-making, task-sharing processes, or sensitive communications. This is an excellent way to organize for events, carry out daily administrative tasks among physically diverse offices, collaborate on important documents, etc.

    How Else Does APC Help Women?

    • Access Vital Information From Around the Globe Through its international partner networks, APC has first-hand information from news services, non-governmental organizations and publications. Examples are UNIC, the Women's Feature Service, Equal Means and complete texts of United Nations document s in 3 languages. There is extensive information available on issues of interest to women: ICPD, WCW, health, labor, immigration, violence against women, sexual harrassment, reproductive rights, and more.

    • Access the Internet Membership in APC allows you take advantage of our direct link to the Internet, the worldwide "network of networks" with over 25 million users worldwide. You can find excellent sources of information quickly and easily on the Internet about women's issues using APC's gopher and WWW service.

    • Reach a Wide Audience Through the Internet Your organization can also use the Internet and the women's section of PAC's gopher and WWW to get information directly to thousands of people, effectively circumventing the male-biased mainstream media.

    • Electronic Mail You can send and receive private messages to and from virtually anybody on any computer network . You can maintain mailing lists to send a message to several people at one time. There is no longer a need to stamp and stuff hundreds of envelopes, or spen d hours next to the fax machine re-feeding the same document.

    • Databases On-line databases include full text of newsletters and alternative publications, bibliographies, speaker lists, grant-making foundation directories, and fax directories of the US Congress, world leaders, and media. APC staff will work with your orga nization to get databases available for the women's community.

      Is Training and User Support Available?

      Yes! Any APC user can call for free user support from 10am to 13am CET time, and on-line support is available 7 days a week. In addition, APC is dedicated to training women on communications technology and has a international network of trainers who can help get you started.       What is the APC?

      The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is a worldwide partnership of member networks that link people working for peace, environmental sustainability and universal human rights. By providing communications and information sharing tools, APC empowers organizations and individuals to organize efficiently and effectively around their specific issues on local, national and international levels.       APC was the primary provider of telecommunications services to non-governmental organizations at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brazil and at the 1993 UN World Conference on Human Rights. The APC partner networks will provide similar services at the Internation al Conference on Population and Development in 1994, The World Summit on Social Development in 1995 and the World Conference on Women in 1995. APC has initiated a two year Women's Networking Support Program to provide extra outreach and training to women worldwide.       Rates

      We also have special rates for groups of users, students and low income people/organizations. Group rates become cost effective when you have seven or more accounts billed to a single address. Student rates are available only to people who are registered with a College, University or High School, and either have an existing Internet account or can dial direct to our office modems.
