NEWS FROM WoMENWITH HILL CAMP
WE HAVE BEEN EVICTED!
But we haven't moved far! Yes, as reported by the media, the
eviction finally took place on Wednesday, and went smoothly and
calmly - even if Anne was the only one of seven women present who
wasn't arrested! Although we lost the caravans and mobile home,
and a great deal more besides, the media coverage and energised
spieit gained by yesterday was well worth it. As Cat later said,
everything material can be renewed.
After receiving a circumspect tip off, the women were up bright
and early yesterday, expecting perhaps a private firm of baliffs
to show up from 7am onwards. As nothing appeared, and the morning
was unusually beautiful, everyone relaxed around the fire,
thinking it perhaps wouldn't happen after all. But, at around
10am, three police arrest vans appeared on the horizon, followed
by 30 police, and up to 50 NYCC Baliffs, contrctors and engineers.
Everyone lurched into action as planned, and within minutes Vron
and Jane were locked to the White House, with Naomi and Shelley on
top of it, Helen around the corner, and Cat locked under it.
Meanwhile the media, alerted immediatly, were being held up at
roadblocks the police had set up on the A59 to stop them even
getting near the camp. It wasn't until the press threatened to
make the roadblock a headline story that they were let through,
just in time to catch the women being hacksawed and bolt-cutted
"free" - and especially to cheer as Cat was removed from under the
White House. Kate jumped into her car as soon as she heard of the
eviction, and impressively was the last one arrested, climbing
onto the top of the caravans as they were loaded on low loaders to
be impounded, closely followed by a mass of police.
Anne gave a long series of media interveiws, which made Look North
and was the headline story on Calendar - opening with a very
dramatic shot of the women being lifted (manhandled) down from the
top of the W/H shouting "evict the spies, not the women!". The
women were all released at 4.30pm, and have been charged with
obstructing the highway - the least of all criminal charges - and
told that the eviction cost 1728, which is the recovery fee for
the vehicles, should we want them back. However the camp is now
temporarily in a layby on the A59, and we've already had the offer
of a new caravan. Tents and basic equipment were salvaged, and
even the flower bed was transplanted, although a new kettle and a
few chairs would be handy... Everyone was brilliant, and thanks to
all supporters - just remember this was our first eviction, and
that Greenham had a history of 13 years of evictions! We will not
be moved, and we stress that the new camp will be along the A59 on
the base perimeter somewhere, so come and see us! We need help to
last!
HELEN JOHN is still in prison, release date 5th May!
TRACY HART was in court yesterday, trial date 19th May. She's been
inside over six weeks now, basically on trumped up charges that
won't hold up in court, as she refuses to agree not to enter the
base again, as she has done at least 300 times, according to the
MoD. Any conviction they secure would not add up to a six week
jail sentence, so could these be desparate holding measures?
Please support her especially now, at; Low Newton Women's Prison,
Brasside, Durham DH1 5SD.
EVICTIONEES are all at Ripon Magistrates on 24th May.
ANNE back in court for an appeal sometime soon.
FESTIVAL May 19-28! BLOCKADE THE BASE MAY 22nd! EVICT THE NSA!!
