This 3-day Convention will consider how a human rights
approach can help to tackle our society's deepest
problems from the abuse of power to inequality, racism
and social injustice.

Women's Rights today Thursday 15, 2.30 - 4.00pm
This session will consist of a briefing and participative debate
involving members of the UK Government's delegation to Beijing and
speakers from organisations campaigning for the rights of women.
It will discuss how women's rights can be protected and enhanced and
consider the UK Governments human rights record.
Speakers include: Robbi Robson, Chair, National Alliance of Women's
Organisations, Georgina Ashworth, Change,
Shelagh Diplock, Fawcett Society.
Culture and women's autonomy Friday 16,11.45am - 12.15pm
The session will consider the particular issues and implications for
women of conflicting values of rights in which `Western' values and
claims to universality of rights are challenged by religious and
cultural values and practices. A panel of speakers refecting different
perspectives will discuss this important international issue.

Against Fundamentalism, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, journalist, Justice
P.N. Bagwhati, former Chief Justice of India
Rights and the Body Friday 16, 2.30 - 4.00pm
A wide ranging session exploring issues including consent to medical
treatment, bodily integrity and reproductive rights and access to
medical information. How does international law define and uphold the
rights to bodily integrity?
Speakers include Patricia Alderson, Institute of Education Julia
Stone, Hempsons solicitors

Liberty and Equality: feminist perspectives on rights Friday 16,
4.30 - 6.00pm
A panel of contributors will discuss the value and adequacy of human
rights approaches to deal with liberty and equality for women.
Speakers include: Bea Campbell, writer and commentator, Christine
Chinkin, Professor of Law, University of Southampton, Samantha
Ashendon, Birkbeck College, and Hon. Justice Silvia Cartwright,
member of the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination
Against Women.

Aid conditionality, Trade and Development Friday 16, 2.30 - 4.00pm

Making Connections - the worldwide movement for rights Saturday 17,
11.45 - 1.15pm
Speakers include: Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim, Past President of the
Women;s International Democratic Federation, President of the banned
Sudenese Women's Union, Dr. Vincent Magombe, African Writers in
Exile
The Convention will take place at Westminster Central
Hall, Church House Conference Centre and other central
London venues. Organised by Liberty (National Council
for Civil Liberties) in partnership with over 50 voluntary
and campaigning organisations, the Convention offers the
most extensive programme of discussions on human rights
ever seen in Britain. A 1-day or 3-day ticket gets you
